Newsletter Week 1 Term 2

Hastings Christian School

8 May 2024

Over the next two weeks parents will have the opportunity to meet with their child’s teacher during the annual parent teacher interviews. This week the secondary staff will be meeting with parents followed by the primary teachers next week.

Given the short time frames of these meetings, I would encourage you to consider this opportunity an introduction to a continuing conversation, should you want more clarity about your child’s progress and ways you can better support them at home.

As I reflect on the relationship between home and school and the many backgrounds and perspectives we each hold, I am reminded again of the importance of listening well to each other. This, as I mentioned in a previous newsletter last term, is the special character strategic goal for the current year. Specifically, it is “learning to listen well.” While the teachers will be doing most of the talking at these interviews, I have encouraged them also to listen well to your questions and observations and to ask questions to seek further clarification.

In Proverbs 18:13 Solomon made the following wise observation He who answers before listening, it is his folly and his shame. The late Stephen Covey, American educator, businessman and author, once said that, ‘Most people don’t listen with the intent to understand. Most people listen with the intent to reply’

My prayer is that we all grow in our ability to listen well, ask good questions and suspend judgements until we have all the facts. Even then, how we proceed with that information needs wisdom, lots of prayer as well as a reliance on the God of all grace. Please also be encouraged to keep our teachers in your prayers at this busy time of the term.
